Year 1 Down

Wtw people,

This read lowkey late as h*ll but hey better late than never.

It’s been 1 year since GCEG started and I felt like reflecting on some things I learned about running this business and what I learned about my audience/Black Mizzou

One thing I learned early on is that everyone would not like what I’m doing or the way I organize our events. A lot of it was expected but some was, in my opinion, completely confusing to me. I realized that no matter what I change, what the price of the tickets are, what the location of the event is at, or how much notice I give, it won’t be perfect or accepted by some. (Which I know now that those few aren’t my audience). But I made GCEG to be a disruptive event group that would do things other orgs and people on campus weren't willing to do so not being liked by a few comes with the game.

I also learned that people need more than just opportunity, they need a clear reason to do things. I thought by providing the space for events and parties that people would be excited to pop out and get involved with it, especially when there is a common understanding that Black Mizzou has been lacking in that area since covid. But no, the message, the benefit, and the reasoning for why people should come has to be clear.

To get a little more technical, human psychology, marketing, branding, and other things that come with influencing people and building a community are some other things I picked up along the way. It’s too much to get in detail here but learning about each of those has helped in how I approach certain things in the future.

I kinda already knew this before starting GCEG but it became more clear to me last year. The environment plays a huge part in the social energy you’ll see around here. For example, if you look at hbcus, from orientation to the last week of school they set the tone for how fun and t’d the experience should be. You can tell who prioritizes the student experience and who doesn’t. It comes down to leadership and ofc the school since they give bread to the orgs but it’s also on the ones who know what a good time is and show others how they can experience the same. They say energy is transferable.

Thanks for read’n
